ABSTRACT


Study the routine job of a nurse working in a general medicine ward of semi-govt. and semi-private hospitals in India and try to analyze the different processes and activities they undertake on a day to day basis and thereby explore design opportunities to improve the work life of these overburdened nurses for enhancing better health care.

Communication between a patient and nurse can be improved to increase the productivity and efficiency of the available nurses thus providing better care. A nurse’s to and fro commutation from nurse station to a patient’s bed often eats away a lot of precious time while addressing patient calls and this delay often leads to further complicacies.
Reduce the error prone manual entry/update system for vitals, patient charts, medicines, which often leads to confusion, missing out on important advice during Doctor’s round, misplacement of reports, incorrect medication timings, etc. in patients’ records in order to make an efficient and more reliable patient care system.

Considering the scope and necessity of an improved time efficient care, Design Direction 1 was undertaken for this system design project.

The objective is to design a time efficient patient nurse communication system for a general medicine ward to effectively improve the quality of care and productivity of available nurses for the well being of both stakeholders.

- Nurse Cap -

An universally recognized symbol of nursing. It allows patients to quickly identify a nurse in the hospital from other members. Originally used in the 1800s by Florence Nightingale - The Founder of Modern Nursing.

Symbolizes the goal of a nurse - “Service to those in need.”
